Rukmani Krishna vivah - Ch. 20

Akroor gave the news of the Pandavas’ death to Krishna and Balram. Balram was very sad but Krishna did not react at all. Krishna did not want to go to Hastinapur for consolation. What he wanted to see was who in Hastinapur was grieving the Pandavas death.

Everyone was happy, but they were pretending to be sad. By Krishna’s expression it was obvious that he knew that Pandavas were in fact alive. Krishna informed Balram that the Pandavas were alive. Balram was assured. On knowing that the Pandavas were alive, even Bhisma Pitamah was very happy.

"Krishna did not want to go to Hastinapur for consolation. What he wanted to see was who in Hastinapur was grieving the Pandavas death. Everyone was happy, but they were pretending to be sad. The Pandavas were living in Chakranagari in the disguise of Brahmins. At the Brahmin’s house where they were staying, on hearing his wife’s lamentation, Kunti asked her the reason for crying. She came to know that there lived a demon named Bakasur in the nearby cave and every day one member of a family had to go be killed by him, and today it was this Brahmin family’s turn. Kunti asked Bhima to go to the demon instead of the Brahmin. A fierce battle was fought between Bhima and Bakasur, and Bhima killed Bakasur. After this, the Pandavas left Chakranagari.

Rukmani’s father wanted to arrange for a Swayamvar (a choice of marriage made by a princess in a public ceremony) for her but his son Rukmi wanted his sister to get married to his friend Shishupal and so opposed the idea of organizing a Swayamvar.

He said that he would rebel if this marriage did not happen.Rukmani’s parents were worried. Even Rukmani was worried. Sage Narad gave this news to Krishna and asked him to be a saviour to Rukmani because if she was not married to him, she would die. Shri Krishna reassured Naradji.

"Rukmi wanted his sister to get married to his friend Shishupal and so opposed the idea of organizing a Swayamvar. He said that he would rebel if this marriage did not happen. Rukmani’s parents were worried. Even Rukmani was worried."

Here, Rukmi sent an invitation to his friend Shishupal to show up with the marriage procession, as Rukmani would be married to him. So Shishupal set out with the procession. Rukmani quickly sent a message to Krishna through her teacher Sage Shatanand, asking Krishna to come and save her from having to marry Shishupal. On getting this message, Krishna immediately left for Vidarbhnagari along with Balram to support him.

Shishupal’s procession reached the marriage place. Rukmani on the pretext of performing Gauri Pooja, reached the Bhawani temple. Meanwhile Rukmi and Shishupal got the news of Krishna’s arrival. They came out raging with the army to attack Him.

Here Balram told Krishna to go to the temple and he would battle Rukmi and Shishupal. Shri Krishna scooped up Rukmani from the temple and took her away with him in his chariot, and headed to Dwarka. Meanwhile Balram defeated Shishupal and his friends. Rukmi had followed Krishna.

Krishna stopped his chariot, and a fierce battle was fought between them. Rukmi was defeated and Shri Krishna wanted to kill him, but Rukmani pleaded with him for her brother’s life. At this, Krishna gifted him his life and left Rukmi there, as he departed with Rukmani for Dwarka.
