Cow is considered as sacred in Hindu culture and worshiped accordingly. Kamadhenu is a divine cow which is worshiped as a goddess. In Rigveda, cows are called as aghnya - one which shouldn't be slaughtered.During the agrarian societies (and even till present day), agriculture and dairy were the prime source of income and due to this reason, cows were considered worthy of being worshiped.
Cow is gentle in nature which also corroborates with the Hindu teaching of Ahimsa (non-violence).
