Sage Patanjali is the father of the Yoga. The originator of Yoga was Hindu God Shiva. He taught Yoga to Saptarishis - the seven great sages - in ancient times. The Yoga taught to Seven sages were different and became seven different aspects of Yoga. After many years, Sage Patanjali compiled all the types of yoga into a single treatise known as Yoga Sutra. Patanjali was not just a sage, he was an enlightened human. He is believed to have lived during 2nd century CE. He has also wrote important works on Ayurveda - the ancient Indian system of medicine. He is also believed to be an avatar (incarnation) of Shesha - the primordial snake and servant of Hindu God Vishnu.
He is depicted here sitting in meditation posture, all chakras been awakened, and a multi-hooded Shesha in the background, signifying that he is incarnated as Patanjali.
