Dhanvantari is the physician of the gods and the god of Ayurveda - an ancient Hindu system of medicine. When Devas and Asuras churn Ksheer Sagar (ocean of milk), Dhanvantari emerges out of the ocean holding a pot of Amrit - the elixir of life. It is common practice in Hinduism for worshipers to pray to Dhanvantari seeking his blessings for sound health for themselves and/or others, especially on Dhanteras or Dhanwantari Trayodashi. The Indian Government has declared that Dhanwantari Trayodashii Kumara every year would be celebrated as "National Ayurveda Day"
He is depicted as a four-armed god holding Amrit pot, Vedas, Medicine, and leech (used for blood purification therapy).
