Vishnu is the God of preservation or sustainer. He is one of the Hindu male trinity gods - Trimurti, the other two being Brahma and Shiva. He is believed to take various avatars or incarnations whenever the world is threatened with evil forces to preserve or protect the world. He has incarnated into ten avatars - Matsya, Kurma, Varaha, Narasimha, Vamana, Parashurama, Ram, Krishna, Balarama, Kalki. Once an asura (demon) named Hiranyaksha tormented the earth and abducted her inside an ocean in Patal Loka. Like all the incarnations, Vishnu incarnated to rescue the world from the crisis and incarnated as a Varaha or boar. He plunged into the waters and retrieved the Earth by lifting her on his tusks. Varaha is depicted as half-human half-boar, four-armed, holding Chakra (disk like weapon), Gada (mace), lotus, and Shankha (conch).
