When Bali was killed by Rama, his wife Tara came weeping and holding the lifeless form in her arms, she said, “Why did you not listen to me? Now you have left me and our son Angad alone and orphaned”.

Shri Rama said, “Your husband died the death of a warrior. I have ensured that Angad remains free from fear with abhaydan. He will be the Yuvaraj, the heir apparent and Sugreeva, as a king of Kishkindha will look after him.” Rama asked Sugreeva to perform the final rites for Bali with all due ceremony. Bali ’s son Angad performed all the rites that a son performs on the father’s death.

Lakshmana performed the coronation of Sugreeva and Angad was installed as Yuvaraj. Tara became the wife of Sugreeva along with Roma. The ceremonies were performed by Lakshmana as Rama did not want to enter a city or village during his exile.

The rainy season started so Sugreeva told Rama that they would begin the search for Sita at the end of the monsoon months. Rama and Lakshmana spent the four months of the season in a cave by the Pampa Lake. Meanwhile Sugreeva was engrossed in enjoyment and entertainment after gaining the throne of Kishkindha. Hanuman reminded him of the promise he had made to Rama. Sugreeva then sent for the army of monkeys to be gathered from all directions.

When the rainy season was over Rama told Lakshmana that the Kingship and two beautiful wives have made Sugreeva forget all about us.You go to Kishkindha and use both fear and affection to remind Sugreeva of his promise and bring him here.

Lakshmana entered Kishkindha in a rage. The sight ofhis enraged face put fear in the heart of Sugreeva and he apologized for his mistake. Along with Lakshmana, he went to meet Rama. He said, “As promised, I have gathered my monkey army to send out in search of Sita.” Then in front of Rama, he called the leaders of the monkeys to take their troops in various directions. Hanuman, Angad and Jambvant went towards the south. They were told to find the whereabouts of Sita within the span of a month. Hanuman touched Rama ’s feet and asked for permission to start the search. Shri Rama was aware of Hanuman ’s strength and ability. He therefore gave him his signet ring so that Sita could recognize him as a messenger of Rama. He also told him to narrate the incident of Indra ’s son Jayant who sinned before Sita in the form of a crow.
