Day One of the Battle and Death of Khumbkaran
Page    1  2

On the day one of the battle, many great warriors were floored on the battlefield.

On the second day, Ravana arrived on the battlefield with his army. Rama also came to confront Ravana and a might battle raged between the two. Rama broke Ravana’s umbrella and his chariot and left him unarmed and helpless, Ravana returned on foot to his palace.

Worried and defeated, Ravana ordered that his brother Kumbhakarna should be woken up. The enormous Kumbhakarna was asleep in a gigantic cave. Hundreds of drums were sounded and thousands of sharp weapons were aimed to rouse him from his slumber.

After a lot of efforts, Kumbhakarna at last woke up. The rakshasas (demonic forces) told him the reason for waking him up and so he went to Ravana. Now Ravana told him all the events from kidnapping of Sita to the attack by Rama. Kumbhakarna said you made a mistake in taking Sita away. Rama is no ordinary mortal; he is an incarnation of Vishnu. Now the clan of rakshasas is doomed but you are my elder brother so I will fight Rama in the battlefield and give up my life fighting for you.

Kumbhakarna now drank up hundred of pots of liquor and devoured the meat of countless animals. Then he was ready to fight.

When Vibheeshan saw him, he came forward to greet his elder brother. He told him about the insulting behavior of Ravana and how he had come to Rama for refuge. He also told Kumbhakarna to do the same.

But Kumbhakarna said, “I see nothing but battle before me so get out of my way and let me fight Rama.” He forged ahead catching, crushing, killing hundreds of monkeys and bears. Several died under his feet. The ones he swallowed alive tried to escape through his nose, ears and mouth.
