Story, Shri Krishna

The lord ordains birth of Sheshnag as Devaki's seventh son

Rohini was in labour-pain while she was in Nandgram. Nandji and Yashoda and few other friends were at her service. Rohini gave birth to Balram. On his birth the celestial damsels in the sky blew the conch-shell where Naradji appeared in an invisible form in Rohini’s room and admired Balram. Kans was worried about the eighth child to be born to Devaki and was petrified of Vishnu. Due to his fear he saw Lord Vishnu on what ever he set his eyes on. Naradji was smiling at the act of Vishnu because even the most sinful person could see Vishnu other than the devotees. He went to Krishna to know the difference between a devotee and a sinner. Krishna said, “People see me in the same form as the feeling with which they remember me and they get the fruit according to the feeling they have for me.” Saying this, Shri Krishna told him the story of Vasudev and Devaki ’s reincarnation.

In their previous life, Vasudev was King Suntapa and Devaki was his wife Prushmi. Suntapa and Devaki went through deep religious austerity to get a sight of God’s Chaturbhuj (an epithet of Brahma) form. God appeared and told them to ask for a boon. Both of them asked for a son like Him (God), to which God said, “Tathashtu” (so be it). After giving the boon, Brahmji started thinking, “I have given the boon but there is no one like me in this universe, how will I fulfill this boon?” He then decided to take birth from Prushmi’s womb. He had said ‘Tathashtu’ thrice so He was born for three lives as her son. In His first life, he came in the name of Prishnigarma, in the second life he was born as Sage Kashyap and Aditi’s son Upendra. Upendra was very small in size that is why he was called “Vaman”. Vaman gave deliverance for demon king Bali. In his third life, he took birth as Krishna from Devaki ’s womb. After this Krishna said, “I have told you this story to end your curiosity but you will not remember any of this ,I will finish my acts at Gokul and when I return to Mathura I will give you the happiness as a son” saying this, Krishna disappeared. Later, Krishna took birth from Devki’s womb. With the miracle of Yogmaya, the doors of the prison opened up and Vasudev carried the newborn Krishna out of the prison and reached the banks of Yamuna to take him to Gokul.

Vasudev placed Krishna in a basket and crossed River Yamuna. Sheshnaag protected Krishna; even River Yamuna rose to bow to Krishna. (The water level started increasing). Krishna understood Yamuna’s love and took one leg out of the basket; when Yamuna touched his feet she was calm. With the help of Yogmaya, Vasudev reached Shri Krishna to Nand and Yashoda’s house. He took their newborn daughter and returned to the prison in Mathura.

Kans got the news of the birth of Devaki ’s eighth child and went to the prison to kill the newborn but he was surprised to see that the newborn child was a girl. He tried to bang her on the rock but she took form of Ashtabhuja (eight handed Goddess) and flew away in the sky. While she was going she told Kans, “The one who is going to kill you is already born.” Great celebrations were happening in Gokul and everyone was going to Nand and Yashoda’s house because of the birth of Shri Krishna.

Kans released Devaki and Vasudev from the prison after the eighth child was born and the subjects were very happy with this. Kans ordered to kill all the newborn children in the state when he came to know that the one who was
going to kill him was already born. Akroor and Shursen went to Sage Garg to find out the suspense of Vasudev and Devaki ’s eighth child being a daughter and the birth of the child who was to kill Kans. Sage Garg told them the story of Sheshnaag being born as Rohini’s son in the form of Balram.

Due to Kans’s order to kill all the newborns the subjects rebelled. Chanur and few other ministers explained to Kans that he should not give a chance to the chief neighbouring king like Nandrai to oppose. On the birth of a son everyone in Gokul suggested Nand go and meet Kans with a gift. Kans was pleases with Nandji, when he went to Mathura with a gift.

Kans analyzed the situation – Nandji’s son was born on the same night when Devaki gave birth to her eighth daughter child and she had said while leaving, that the one who was going to kill him had been born. There was no news about a child to be born at Nand’s place but that same night the son was born. He was sure that he was the eighth child who was born from Devaki ’s womb. He sent giantess Putna to Gokul to kill Balkrishna (baby Krishna). Putna transformed herself into a beautiful lady, reached Nand’s place in Gokul and tried to breast feed Krishna with poison in her breast to kill him but instead Krishna killed putna.

Putna ’s dead body was cremated, just then a celestial plane came and Putna ’s soul went off to heaven. In Golok (abode of Lord Krishna), Krishna went ahead to welcome Putna calling her mother. Radhawas surprised at this, so he explained to her: “Putna was demon King Bali’s daughter Ratnamala in her previous life. She was pleased with my monkey form and wished to have me as her son but when I took away Bali’s state from him Ratnamala thought of poisoning me. I accepted to fulfill both of her wishes. In the form of Putna , she breastfed me like a mother and at the sametime gave me poison. She is like my mother. I have respected her by giving her the status of a mother.”

Radha

Shri Krishna’s dear friend and worshipper Radha was the daughter of a cowherd named Vrishbhanu. In the Padmapuran, she is said to be the daughter of a King named Vrishbhanu. When the King was cleaning the space of the sacrifice (yagya), he found Radha in the form of Bhoomiputri (daughter of mother earth). The king nurtured her as his own daughter. There is one more story said about the birth of Radha according to which when Lord Vishnu was to incarnate as Krishna, he asked all the deities and goddesses of his family to incarnate on the earth. Then, Lord Vishnu’s consort and the one who was residing in the Vaikunthlok, Laxmi incarnated on the earth as Radha. There are many different ancient stories said about the birth of Radha but the one that is unanimously accepted is that Radha was the daughter of Vrishbhanu who was king Suchandra in his previous life. Suchandra and his wife had acquired a boon from Brahmaji that in the Dwapar age Shri Laxmi will be born as a daughter to them in the form of Radha. King Suchendra and Queen Kalavati only were reborn as Vrishbhanu and Kirtikumari and Laxmiji was incarnated as Radha.

It is believed that Goddess Kali had given a part of her powers to her, for the destruction of the Kauravas. Draupadi was a damsel of dark complexion but of great beauty, "As radiant and graceful as if she had descended from the city of the gods." Draupadi’s other name was Krishna (dark skinned).
