Madri was the daughter of Rutayan, the King of Madrapradesh and the sister of Shalya. She was the mother of the Pandavas, Nakul and Sahadev. On his way to Hastinapur, King Pandu encountered the army of Shalya, King of Madra. Very soon, Pandu and Shalya became friends and Shalya gave his only sister, Madri to Pandu, as a gift of their friendship. Looking at her beauty, Pandu accepted the lady willingly and took her to Hastinapur. To beget children, she used the Mantra obtained by Kunti ( Second wife of Pandu) from Sage Durvasa and summoned for the Ashwini Kumars who gave her two beautiful sons named Nakul and Sahadev.
Madri also became a reason for Pandu’s death. While wandering in the jungle, Pandu was fascinated by Madri’s beauty and out of lust, took her in his arms. Pandu was cursed that if he tries to have physical relation with a woman, he will die. Out of lust, he forgot about the curse and died immediately. Madri, filled with remorse, self immolated herself on Pandu's funeral pyre. Kunti became a single mother of the five children.
