Other names: Kunteebhoj

Kuntibhoj was King Shoorsen's cousin and was his very good friend. He did not have any child so when Shoorsen was expecting a child to be born in his palace, he promised to give that child to Kuntibhoj. He had a daughter and so he gave her to Kuntibhoj. Thus Prutha was brought up by Kuntibhoj and there rechristened as Kunti. Krishna was Prutha's cousin. Once, Sage Durvasa came to Kuntibhoj’s palace. King had entrusted Kunti the work of welcoming Sage Durvasa. Durvasa was pleased with Kunti and he gave her a mantra that on uttering it, she could think of any deity and summon him to bear a child from the deity. With the use of this mantra, the five Pandavas were born.
