When demon King Andhakasur returned to Patal lok after being a devotee of Ganga, demon guru Shukracharya was very disgusted and ordered the demon ministers to take away the crown from Andhakasur and crown Hiranyakashyap the demon king. Demon ministers obeyed his orders and crowned Hiranyakashyap the king of demons and lord of Patal lok.
Kayadhu was the wife of Hiranyakashyap. Kayadhu had not got married to Hiranyakashyap with her wish. After becoming the King of demons, Hiranyakashyap attacked Nag lok. To save his subjects from the terror of Hiranyakashyap, helpless Nagraj got his daughter Kayadhu married to Hiranyakashyap. Kayadhu was a great devotee of Lord Vishnu and getting married to demon king Hiranyakashyap was not less than a shock for her.
Shukracharya had blessed Kayadhu to have a son but he was not aware that this blessing of his will one day becomes the reason for Hiranyakashyap’s death. When Hiranyakashyap came to know that Kayadhu was a devotee of Vishnu, he was very angry. Shukracharya was very unhappy that he blessed Kayadhu to be the mother of a son.
After sometime, to attain immortality, Hiranyakashyap went on to Mandarachal Mountain for penance. Here, Kayadhu was pregnant. Shukracharya tried to kill the fetus in Kayadhu’s womb but Devi Ganga and Devi Uma fails his attempts. In the absence of Hiranyakashyap, devtas attacked Demons. After a fierce battle, demons were defeated and ran away. Intoxicated with the win, Indra made Kayadhu his captive and started going towards heaven. On the way Devarshi Narad convinced Indra and set free Kayadhu from Indra’s hold and reached Kayadhu to Rishi Manchanda’s ashram. During this period, Naradji preached Kayadhu on religion and knowledge. While her stay at sage Madhuchanda’s ashram, Kayadhu got educated on devotion, knowledge and religion which was grasped by the fetus in her womb. As days passed, Kayadhu gave birth to a son. Naradji named him Prahlad. Prahlad also became a great devotee of Vishnu.
Hiranyakashyap returned after acquiring a boon from Brahmaji and brought back his wife and son to the palace. Later, he attacked the devtas and took over the Swarg lok (heaven) and started harassing devtas, saints and sages. He also tried to kill his son Prahlad as he was worshipping Vishnu. Kayadhu always stopped her husband from going against lord Vishnu but Hiranyakashyap never listened to her. It was because of his hatred towards Vishnu that Hiranyakashyap was killed by lord Narsinha.
